About
Jeff and Laura McCarthy Louden have cultivated land originally purchased by her father in 1959 that was left barren 40 years after his early, unexpected passing. Nearly 10 years in the works, they have cleared land, constructed a new road & bridge, planted vines & fruit trees, created hiking trails on the 90 acre farm which take visitors to the mountain peak, built a farmhouse with start-up space in the cellar and finally got the doors open to visitors in June 2011.
In 2013, the Department of Agriculture extended the New Farmer construction loan enabling a separate building for production, tastings and events to take form which opened St. Patrick's Day weekend of 2014. After quietly making boutique cider & wines "back in the woods" for many years, Cobbler Mountain has introduced many visitors to the taste of hard cider.
In Spring of 2014, the Original Honey Apple Hard Cider took home its first SILVER MEDAL during the New York Finger Lakes Competition. Summer of 2014, introduced Cobbler Mountain to the growing community of cider-makers through the statewide organization.
Meanwhile, after 3 1/2 years of establishing eligibility, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture awarded Cobbler Mountain Cellars the Entrepreneurial Value-Added Producer Grant in August 2014 (offering matching funds for staffing, production & marketing up to $200,000 over a three-year-term) enabling this "Little Winery that Could" the opportunities to serve the greater D.C. Northern Virginia region on a year-round basis, through quality and innovation!
